How can I find out if a college is actually accredited?

Answered By Devon Turnhill, Editor

The easiest way to find out if a school is accredited is to check out their accrediting agency. Some may think that only the colleges fake their accreditation. But very few know that there are even fake accrediting agencies who give out fake accreditation to schools. If you're looking at a school in the US, they must be accredited by any one of the six official accreditation agencies in the country.

- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools (www.msache.org)

- New England Association of Schools (www.neasc.org)

- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (www.ncacihe.org)

- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (www.cocnasc.org)

- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (www.sacs.org)

- Western Association of Schools and Colleges (www.wascweb.org)

John Bear, author of Bear's Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning identifies some ways to determine whether the school of your choice is accredited or not. Firstly, US-based schools should be accredited by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (www.chea.orh). For British schools, they must be members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Australian schools are approved by the Australian Qualifications Framework. Other schools must be included in the World's Education Series.

Some schools are also approved by the state department, while more foreign schools are approved by the country's legitimate accrediting body.
