Are there different types of college accreditation?
Answered By Devon Turnhill, Editor
Basically, there are two types of college
accreditation. The first is Institutional
accreditation which is granted to a school
that has met the standards and requirements
of the accrediting organization. In this
type, all aspects of the school's operation
is assessed, from the program offerings to
the curriculum to the administration and the
facilities and other services of the school.
An institutional accreditation signifies high
quality in terms of faculty, administration,
student, curriculum and program offerings and
facilities.
Institutional accreditation is further
classified into two types, the regional and
the national accreditation. These two types
of accreditation are dependent on the
evaluator or the accrediting agency, which
can be a regional or a national organization.
The second type of college accreditation
is the specialized, professional or
programmatic accreditation. This is designed
for specific departments, units, or programs
of a particular college or university. It
assesses a particular aspect of the program,
department, unit or field of study. It can
zero in on specific fields like nursing,
engineering, or law, among others of one
particular college or university.
