What do employers think of online bachelor degrees?

Answered By Devon Turnhill, Editor

In a 2002 survey conducted by Vault.com, an employment research site, 26% of the 239 respondents (mostly HR professionals and recruiters) said that an online bachelor's degree is as credible as the traditional bachelor's degree. Sixty one percent said that it isn't as credible as the traditional degree but is acceptable. The rest said that an online bachelor's degree is not acceptable and credible.

While some employers have become more progressive in thinking, many are still hesitant about taking on someone with a degree obtained online. Some younger, more progressive employers wouldn't care about a degree obtained online, because it is, afterall, an indication of the person's ambition and his desire to improve himself and learn new things. And because distance learning is becoming more and more popular and common these days, many employers are now less discriminating with their applicants, allowing for consideration to applicants with online degrees.

It all boils down on how you defend and package yourself in the end. A tough, conservative boss might even put you in the top position even with an online degree if you show him what that degree has taught you. Of course, you make sure that your school and that degree of yours is accredited and not just another rip-off gimmick of some kind.
